Tour Barbaresco

Tips from a local; the insider guide to Barbaresco wine area.

Barbaresco one of the major wine making areas in the Langhe region, in Piedmont, Italy. Here you have the more elegant side to the Nebbiolo grape. Barbaresco is made up of 4 villages (Neive, Barbaresco, Treiso, a fraction of Alba: San Rocco Seno d’Elvio) and is a much smaller region than the neighbor to the west Barolo.

In Barbaresco the altitude is much lower but the hillsides are much steeper and the views, well the views are just even more breathtaking. In Barbaresco we are lucky as they are 4 little sleepy towns just waiting to be waken up. Here is my guide of each town in Barbaresco wine area.

Barbaresco Village:

The Barbaresco village itself is touching the river Tanaro which divides the Langhe from the Roero. If you are into hiking, a walk along the river Tanaro is very nice and throughout the vineyards of Barbaresco to Neive there are many very nice paths. Talk to your hotel for the local walking maps.

In Barbaresco this sleepy little town you have some of the biggest and most famous names of the wine.  On the main street you will walk by the winery of Gaja and around the corner in front of the Tower you will find Produttori del Barbaresco. At Produttori del Barbaresco they have an open tasting room where you do not need a reservation so you are free to walk in and say hi, and of course taste the latest vintages.

One place in Barbaresco not to miss is my favorite, a deconsecrated Church that has been magically transformed into a wonderful Enoteca. Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco here you can taste several different types of Barbaresco and have the possibility to purchase many more at really good prices.

Treiso Village:

The highest point in the Barbaresco area, and here you have some of the most amazing view points. The sleepier town, more so than Barbaresco has a small center, but is full of nice surprises (Michelin starred restaurant). Here in Treiso there are some  of the most elegant expressions of the Barbaresco area and I will of course put some of my favorite wineries to visit.

Neive Village:

Now it is time for my favorite town in Barbaresco, a UNESCO Site, and the liveliest town in all the Langhe and in my maybe bias opinion the most beautiful town in Piedmont, Neive.  I have lived here and I do not want to live anywhere else in the world.

Make sure to take a trip up to the view point on the top of the hill where you can see the rolling hills of Barbaresco vineyards, and also the castles in Roero. This view point is located underneath the clock tower of Neive. The Clock Tower - La Torre Comunale dell’Orologio, was built in 1224 under the rule of Asti, and is the oldest standing building in Neive.
